Summer basketball recap
submitted by Zachary Neal, MHS Varsity Basketball head coach
After not being able to have a summer basketball season last year because of COVID, I’m thrilled with what we accomplished over the summer months. We started with 4 man workouts in May, a schedule of 15 games in June, and open gyms in July that had 12-15 participants ranging 6th-12th grade each Sunday.
Coming off of a tough season we knew that this summer was going to be crucial for our development both individually and as a team. I’m so proud of all of the boys who were able to participate. Their summers are so busy with other sports, work, and just being kids. It’s not always the most fun thing to go from swimming in your friend’s pool to a two hour basketball practice — but the kids stayed committed and had fun doing it.
So many players showed improvement just from March when our last season ended and that was fun to see. We won games throughout the summer and we’re trying to make it so winning is a normal part of our culture and not something that comes occasionally. In most cases, winning breeds more winning and I could tell the kids loved the feeling.
Going forward, we are looking towards Youth Hoops this fall, 4 man workouts and Open Gyms in October for High Schoolers, and our first day of practice will be November 15th. As always, follow our Facebook page for the most recent updates on events.
