October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Manchester Varsity Boys Soccer team has dedicated all their home games in the month of October to showing their support to the POWER of the PINK!

On Tuesday, October 12th, Dutch Soccer debuted their pink jerseys hosting the Grass Lake Warriors in a tough game where they secured a big win of 4-2! The Warriors scored two goals in the first half then the Dutch had a big come back in the second half where they scored all 4 goals and their strong defense held their backs for the remainder of the game.

Next, the Flying Dutchmen hosted their first District soccer playoff game on Thursday, October 14th, against the Ypsilanti Arbor Prep Gators. Manchester Boys Soccer again played with great pride and tenacity in their pink jerseys where they secured another strong win of 5-0! To celebrate their support for Breast Cancer Awareness, at the conclusion of the game the Manchester boys invited their Moms on to the field where they were each presented a pink flower and shared in a memorable picture.

In late August, Cheryl Smith approached varsity soccer coach, Dan Tar, to discuss the idea of hosting a home game in October with the team wearing pink socks to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness. The idea was sparked by her son, Cody Smith, a junior and three-year starter who had been impacted over the years with various family members with breast cancer. In addition, it was shared with the coach that other team members had been impacted by breast cancer as well, and offered to purchase the socks for this worthy cause.

Coach Tar quickly showed his deep support and enthusiasm for this idea and adopted an even better approach to order both pink jerseys and socks for the team to wear at all home games in October. Athletic Director, Lon Pinhey, also played a key role supporting Coach Tar with the procurement of the pink jerseys and socks.

Breast Cancer develops in 1 of 8 women in the course of their lifetime and is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. There are more than 3.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S as reported by the American Cancer Society. The key to prevention is early detection, screening, and engaging in a healthy lifestyle. We celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month in October recognizing all the brave survivors and those we have cherished and lost.

The Flying Dutchmen Soccer is hosting their second-round District soccer playoff game against Plymouth Christian Academy Eagles on Tuesday, October 19th at 7 pm at Dutch Stadium. Manchester Soccer has continued to defend their competitive reputation and currently holds a record of 10 wins, four losses, and two ties. Please come out to cheer on and support this talented team as they battle for their next District win and Breast Cancer Awareness!

Go Dutch and keep making us PROUD!
