Veteran’s Day, originally called Armistice Day, is a federal holiday celebrated on November 11 each year, on the day World War I ended in 1918. The World War I armistice was signed on the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,” and that observance has continued annually since signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. It was officially established by Congress in 1938, to honor the active and retired soldiers who fought in World War I.

Following World War II, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, on October 8, 1954, issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation” which stated, “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose” of acknowledging veterans of all wars, as well as all who have honorably served in the US military.

Flags adorned downtown Manchester to show pride in our veterans on Thursday, November 11. Flags are placed on patriotic holidays by American Legion Post 117.

The Snoopy Mailbox once again set out to honor Manchester’s veterans. Thanks to the Okey family for continuing this local tradition.

The Star-Spangled Banner was one of the many patriotic songs that was featured during Klager’s Veteran’s Day assembly presentation.

Many local veterans and family members attended the assembly; most introduced themselves and shared information about their service.

Classes shared patriotic music including “America the Beautiful,” “America To Me,” “This Land is Your Land,” and other traditional songs.

“Yankee Doodle” was another traditional song that the Klager Kids shared with the audience.

Principal Karin Villarreal led a tour of Klager, and chatted with some of the veterans in attendance.

The “Veterans Wall” is a popular attraction at Klager Elementary, which grows each year.
