Chili cookoff set for this weekend
The Manchester Co-Op Preschool has a new date and a new location for one of its most popular events, the annual Chili Cookoff!
Originally scheduled for during December’s Christmas in the Village celebration, the event had to be postponed due to Covid concerns. Their new date is this Saturday, January 29, from 5 to 8 pm. And they have, happily, found a new home at River Raisin Distillery.
“We are SO excited to be working with RRD,” said Ashley Rickert of the Co-Op Preschool. “They are so very kind and helpful. Krista and Joe (Jarvis) always go above and beyond for Manchester, so this is a very exciting change for us.”
The Jarvis’ are excited for the opportunity to be working with the preschool as well. They love doing outreach in the community as part of their business model and they realize that as a community we are all interconnected. They also enjoy using their event space to accommodate local events, and you can’t get much more local than the Manchester Co-Op Preschool.
The preschool is a non-profit organization that has been around since 1963, and all proceeds from the cookoff will directly benefit their students and teachers, help pay their building rent, and purchase supplies needed for their classroom.
Many local restaurants and businesses are participating in this year’s cookoff, but chili cookers are still being sought. Enter your best chili for $25, and tasting is free, but there is a suggested donation of $1 per taste. Contact Ashley Rickert if you would like to enter your chili, at 734-678-2230. First place winner, “people’s choice,” will take home the prize of the total entry fees, as well as the new “Wooden Spoon” which will be the ongoing traveling trophy for the event. There is room for 15 cooks this year!
All contestants are to bring their chili to River raisin Distillery at 4:30; doors open at 5 pm, silent auction bidding begins, and tasting will run from 5-6 pm, with the winner announced shortly thereafter. At 7 pm, silent auction bidding will close and winners will be announced.
Among the silent and live auction items up for grabs will be a $500 gift card to ALDI, a Melissa and Doug kids’ taco stand, a bike from Sharon Valley Bicycle Shoppe (sponsored by Worth Repeating), a Montessori step stool made by the Manchester Men’s Club, Kendra Scott jewelry, tons of baskets made by co-op families, gift certificates from several local businesses, and other fun goodies!
“We are looking forward to this event and hope everyone comes by for chili!” said Rickert.
