Varsity basketball posts a January win
The varsity Dutchmen returned from a Covid pause this week and played three games, ending up with a Saturday night win over the Addison Panthers in a make-up game.
Wednesday night, in a home game vs. Grass Lake, the Dutch posted a 58-40 loss to the Warriors.
“We started out well and led 14-9 three minutes before halftime,” said head coach Zach Neal. “Grass Lake eventually wore us down, however, and we never clicked in the second half.”
Team standout Jaxon McGuigan led with 10 points and 15 rebounds that night.
On Friday, the Dutch traveled to Hanover Horton, where they suffered a disappointing, lopsided loss of 63-36.
“After a slow start, trailing 36-10 at halftime, we battled back to make it 41-29 towards the end of the third,” Neal said. “It started with our defensive intensity and our commitment to playing as a team. The third quarter was the best quarter we’ve played as a team in two years.”
In the end, however, the deficit was too much to overcome; but Neal said he was proud that his team continued to battle until the very end.
Aiden Kelly posted 10 points and 6 rebounds in the game, as did McGuigan. Andy Campbell had six points and six rebounds to add to the team’s effort.
On Saturday night, the Dutch hosted Addison in a make up game and finally “busted through the door” to get a 39-35 win.
“We played really well defensively, which made the win possible,” Neal said. “With four minutes left in the game, Addison had only 19 points. A late rally made the score closer, but we were able to hold on for the win.”
Kelly led in scoring with 14 points and added 8 rebounds; Campbell was close behind with 13 points to his credit.
This week, the Dutchmen head to East Jackson on Tuesday and will host Napoleon on Wednesday. Go Dutch!
