The Pistol Prodigies Youth Pistol and Rifle Team earned 13 medals at the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) Great Lakes Regional Match, held in Brooklyn, Michigan, May 20–22, 2022. The team’s 17 members, all of whom hail from Washtenaw County, competed: Ashley, Bodi, Caleb, Carson, CJ, Connor, Drey, Hunter, Jordyn, Kayley, Lincoln, Macie, Memphis, Owen, Spence, Tobias, and Wesley.

SASP is a team sport where awards are based on four person–squad performance. Squads are broken down by age division. Student Athlete divisions are Rookie — 5th grade and under, Intermediate — 6th through 8th grade, and Senior — 9th through 12th grade. There is also a collegiate division for full-time college students up to age 26.

The firearm disciplines include: rimfire pistol, centerfire pistol, rimfire pistol optic, centerfire pistol optic, rimfire rifle iron sight, rimfire rifle optic sight, pistol caliber carbine, and centerfire 1911. Rookies can only compete in the rifle disciplines. Intermediate, Senior, and Collegiate athletes can add the pistol disciplines as well.

The Great Lakes Regional had 294 athlete entries from 11 teams, from five states. Michigan teams included NSCC United States Division (Laingsburg), Pistol Prodigies (Manchester), Sherman Hills Straight Shooters (Sturgis), Warrior’s Shooting Team (Grass Lake), and WWCCA Straight Shooters (Plymouth). Out-of-state teams were the Buckeye Bullet Busters (Ohio), Castlewood Speed Steel Shooters (Pennsylvania), Hoosier Daddy (Indiana), Ike’s Young Guns (Indiana), Union Grove Pistol Team (Wisconsin), and Wilmot Panthers (Wisconsin).

The Pistol Prodigies were started in 2014 by Head Coaches Lisa and Scott Poet. They, along with Coach Jeff, guide the athletes through several competitions annually in Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Bill, Chris, Gary, Jami, and Nick round out the rest of the team’s volunteer crew. The team also has several team parents and friends who jump in to support the team every chance they get. And the team has several sponsors that have supported them throughout the seasons. Please visit http://www.pistolprodigies.org/team-sponsors.html to check out these great businesses.

The Pistol Prodigies’ mission statement describes the team’s goals perfectly. “The Pistol Prodigies Youth Pistol Team is a youth development program that uses the shooting sports to teach SAFETY, Responsibility, and Teamwork to student athletes of all ages.” The team is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. This allows the team to fundraise for practice, equipment, ammunition, and competition costs. Donations to the team may be tax deductible. We are also a Varsity Letter sport at Manchester High School.

Upcoming matches are the Ohio State Shoot, Wisconsin State Match, Michigan State Championship, Wisconsin Late Summer Regional, and the SASP National Championships in Marengo, Ohio.

The team is hosting a fundraising banquet in Ann Arbor on October 8. Guns, fun, food, raffles, games, and friendship will be on tap for the night. Check out the team’s website for details.
