If you drove to Chelsea this weekend, you may be wondering what the two loud, large columns of fire, visible from M-52, were.

During a recent inspection, Consumers Energy discovered a valve issue that needs to be fixed at their Chelsea Valve Station located on M-52, south of the intersection with I-94. Before they can begin the work, they need to “flare.“ During the flaring, carbon dioxide and water vapors are released into the air. A loud, constant sound, similar to a jet engine, is a by-product of the process. They stated, “Flaring is the most environmentally safe way to release gas prior to us working on the site.“

Consumers stated that there will be someone onsite at all times during the flaring process and there will be a water truck mainly to spray down the area to keep the equipment cool and the surrounding area wet. The Washtenaw County Emergency Manager’s office was notified.
