Letter to the editor: Turtle rescue!
June 8, 2022
Traffic was suddenly stopping just as I was driving over the river on the bridge near the library on M-52 at about 4:15pm, Tuesday, June 7. I got out my phone to take pictures after I determined it wasn’t an accident or a dangerous situation.
A young lady had gotten out of her car, and cars stopped in both directions as she began to rescue a turtle crossing from the west to the east of the road. It may have been a snapping turtle since the lady obviously did not want to pick it up and was trying to push it along with her foot! She had gotten it about halfway across when a man in the pickup in front of me pulled over, jumped out, and made the decision to quickly and carefully pick it up and put it in the safety of the grass where it was headed. I did not recognize the impassioned young lady but, coincidentally, it was my kind neighbor Mr. Pawlusiak who finally got the turtle to safety.
By the time the rescue was complete there must have been at least 20 cars lined up in both directions. I didn’t hear even one exasperated honk, but I’m sure there were lots of smiles on the faces of all the supportive drivers and passengers as we slowly proceeded to our destinations. It is highly satisfying when thoughtful cooperation strikes.
