Senior Project Fresh coming to Acorn
submitted by Theresa Herron, Acorn Farmers Market & Café
This year, Acorn Farmers Market & Cafe will be participating in the Senior Market Fresh program, funded by the USDA Farm Bill and administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Seniors who qualify will receive a coupon booklet they can redeem at Acorn for locally produced fruit, vegetables, and honey. This benefits both community members and farmers — the community members get fresh healthy food at no cost to them, and the farmers get additional sales of their products. This program runs through October 31st.
To qualify, seniors must be 60 years old or older (or 55 years of age or older AND a member of a federally-recognized tribe/an urban Native American group) live in Washtenaw County, and have a total monthly household income of 185% of the poverty line or less ($1,986 for 1 person; $2,686 for 2 person household).
Please visit the store for enrollment information, or email Tedi Milgrom at the Washtenaw County Health Department, at milgromt@washtenaw.org.
