Obituary: James R. Duncan
It is with extreme sadness that we share the unexpected passing of our brother, James R. Duncan, aged 61. He passed peacefully while sleeping at home in San Bernardino, California, on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. James was a loving, bright light in this world, and he will be missed by so many.
James was born April 29, 1960, in Jackson, Michigan, to Marcia and James Duncan, formerly of Saline, Mich. He was a gifted percussionist, playing drums, marimba, timpani, and bells. His love of music began early and grew as he performed in the Manchester High School marching and pep band and choir. This passion continued into college where he was a member of the Michigan State University Marching Band. In his senior year he was the Section Leader of the Drum Corps.
During college James performed in “The Golden Garter Review” at Dill’s Old Town Saloon in Traverse City, Mich., for two summers and “The Schussy Cats” at Schuss Mountain, Mich., for one summer.
Inspired by these summer experiences in college, James decided to pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician. Upon receiving his bachelor’s degree in business from MSU, he moved to California. There he attended the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, a school previously attended by such artists as Michael Jackson, Linda Ronstadt, and Barry Manilow. Following his studies, James played with a wide range of talents including Al Jarreau, composer John Williams and his orchestra, and numerous other artists and musicians. Eventually James used his business degree to work with artists in obtaining corporate sponsorships with, for example, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, and Pepsi.
In 1990, he married Blanca Ramirez after meeting her on a missions trip to Mexico with his church. They resided both in the Los Angeles area and, for a brief period, in Ann Arbor, Mich.
In 1992, James was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Throughout his illness, he demonstrated perseverance and determination and remained active with his music as long as he was able. As his illness progressed, he devoted more time volunteering at his church. He often turned to scripture, reading his bible as well as devotional books daily for several hours. In fact, he underlined many passages in his bible and devotionals in blue ink.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Marcia and James Duncan of Saline, Mich. In addition to his wife, Blanca, he is survived by his sister Beth (Dan) Ragle; brother Eric (Stephanie) Duncan; sister Leslie (Kip) Read; nephews Jonah, Ashton, and Hunter Read; Aunt Laurie (Dennis) Bayma; Uncle Fritz (Judy) Miller; Uncle Donald Duncan; Uncle Jack (Shirley) Duncan; and numerous cousins and family members.
James’ outgoing, friendly nature never knew a stranger. Anyone who knew him was touched by his kindness, humor, and mild temperament. He loved and cared about his family and friends deeply, and we take comfort knowing that James is no longer in physical discomfort but is now walking with his Lord and Savior in Heaven.
We will all miss him more than words can ever express.
A memorial service is to be announced later.
Friends and family may contact James’ sister Beth Ragle (Duncan) at beth2@biblestuph.com in the meantime for more information on how to share their condolences.
