Meet the MDL board: David Nelson, Village of Manchester
submitted by Quintessa Gallinat, Manchester District Library
The Manchester District Library Board of Trustees is an all-volunteer governing body made up of two members from each of the library’s participating service areas: Manchester Village, Manchester Township, Bridgewater Township, and Freedom Township. Trustees create and oversee library policies, administer the budget, and set the strategic plan.
David Nelson grew up in Jackson, where he worked at the Jackson District Library during high school. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in ceramics from Eastern Michigan University. After establishing studios in Milan, Ann Arbor, Dexter, and Concord, he finally settled on Manchester in 1996. Purchased in 2013, the current home of David W. Nelson Pottery — 319 Morgan Street — is where David crafts his unique style of hand-made pottery, primarily functional porcelain tableware.
A devoted patron of the Manchester District Library, David decided in 2015 that he “needed to help out.” He volunteered to join the Board of Trustees and served as Treasurer from then until earlier this year. What keeps him coming back? “Manchester Library is small and homey and everybody knows each other. It’s a great place to meet people from the community,” he says. “Even though it’s small, there are so many resources. And it’s walkable!”
Members of the public are welcome to attend the monthly meetings, held in the Village Chambers of the Community Building on the second Thursday of each month. To learn more or to contact a member of the MDL Board of Trustees, visit manchesterlibrary.info/
