Letter to the editor: Proposal 3 — abortion will lead to the gradual extinction of humankind
October 19, 2022
Dear brothers and sisters,
It is the right of everyone to vote their conscience this upcoming election. Make your voice be “heard” through this vote. Since every human being has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as stated in our Declaration of Independence, I am sure you will listen to your heart and your conscience before casting your vote.
Human life starts at the point of conception in our mother’s womb, before being born. Human DNA is the codification of human life, and science has taught us that this initiates at the point of conception. With DNA, science has proven the beginning of human life.
It is paramount that women should have access to medical care that they choose. Does a woman’s health care encompass the right to prevent another human being from having the right to continued life? Furthermore, is abortion simply health care? Well, it is simple when it involves one human life, but when it involves two, it becomes much more complicated. When the medical care involves two human lives, there are two voices to be heard. The problem is that one can be heard; someone else must infer the other. But it is obvious that the young voice (the baby) will wish to survive and have a chance to start his/her journey on earth.
How do we deal with potential conflicts with these two voices? Again, it’s not simple, but we can parse down the scenarios. When the mother’s and the baby’s lives are at stake doing nothing to save either or both lives isn’t acceptable. But what if only one can be saved? In this case, if the mother chooses her life over her child’s, it is far from being abortion but an act of self-defense and I sure hope everyone will agree with me. That has been codified with federal law in 1986, based on the US Constitution. This scenario does not require resolution by a Michigan constitutional amendment.
What about purely elective abortions? Statistics show that the majority of abortions, 86%–90% of total abortions, is purely elective. This seems easy to decide on a logical basis. Science has established that life begins at conception through DNA. Is it not murder to end another’s life? The proposed amendment would allow for this act. Regardless of religion, most would agree that murder is morally wrong.
Some final thoughts: No human being has ever given birth to anything other than a human life, as our DNA is unique and specific to us. If our parents at one point in our development in the womb had decided not to give us a chance to life, we wouldn’t be here.
This vote has nothing to do with your political, nor your religious, affiliation. Really? We dare to say yes. Why? We have to appeal to all humankind regardless of their religious affiliation, for the USA is a melting pot of people from different backgrounds, beliefs, and faiths. We do probably share fairly common moral codes, such as the ending of one human life by another, being universally known as murder. All these people are part of our country and their votes count. Voting No to proposal 3 in our view is a crucial step to preserving humanity, to preserving life in its intrinsic meaning. By joining forces, together we will prevail, for the devil’s aim is to divide and conquer.
In conclusion, indeed we are pro-life, so we know that in your heart, you don’t want to see the extinction of humankind. For if every mother decides not to give a chance to the innocent life God has lovingly entrusted to her care, it will indeed lead to a gradual extinction of humankind.
