The holidays are over, kids are back in school, and the dark, chilly nights of January stretch out in front of us — so there’s no better time to cozy up with a fuzzy blanket, a warm fire, and a book. Maybe a sweet romance tickles the fancy, or perhaps a thrilling adventure story — whatever the genre, these (and more!) are available at the Friends of the Manchester District Library’s Used Book Sale!

This January features Thriller and Suspense novels! On the first floor, directly across from the elevator, is a small bookshelf where the theme of the month is featured. This is a new addition to the book sale and will continue through 2023. Previous featured genres were Crafts & Hobbies (December) and Cookbooks & Entertaining (November). Those books are still available on the bookshelf to the left and also upstairs.

A free romance swap rack is another new addition to the book sale. Feel “free” to read, return, and repeat with your favorite paperback romance novels. That is also located on the first floor, next to the elevator.

When visiting, please make sure to take a journey upstairs to the second floor where there are more books for sale on low-slung shelves, back behind the ledge that overlooks the main floor and also next to the elevator. Romance novels tend to be on the left, with general fiction next, nonfiction in the middle, and young adult and picture books finishing up on the right. A small assortment of sci-fi and fantasy are on top, as well as some CDs/DVDs.

Two payment boxes are available: one on the first floor (on the left side of the largest bookshelf) and one on the second floor (on the left side of the row of bookshelves). Hardcovers are $1 each and paperbacks, CDs, and DVDs are 50¢ each.

You can also support the sale by dropping off books on donation days, which are held the second Saturday of the month, from April through October, in the Village Room from 10am to noon. The Village Room is located on the lower level and can be accessed from the rear parking lot of the Library.

The Friends’ book sale has provided funds for the Library’s summer reading program and other special programs at the Library. The Friends also support reading more widely in the community with contributions to reading programs in the schools by sponsoring a “Free Little Library” and giving away children’s books during the annual Village Halloween event, to name a few.

Who are the Friends, you may be asking. The Friends of the Library is a group of library patrons dedicated to supporting programs and events at the Manchester District Library that cannot be achieved within the scope of the Library’s budget and/or staff. Most of the Friends’ funds comes from the ongoing used-book sale.

Any resident of the areas served by Manchester District Library can be a member of the Friends group. There is no membership fee and they meet three times per year, in January, May, and October, at the Library.

Are you interested in joining? Here’s how!

  • You can fill out a membership form at the library.
  • You can show up at any meeting or donation day and say, “Hey, I want to join!”
