Seniors host open house next Friday, May 12
by Marsha Chartrand
It has been a long road for the Manchester Area Senior Citizens Council to locate, prepare, clean, and furnish a home of their own. Now that it’s finally become a reality, the Seniors have decided to hold an Open House to show off their new room and say “thank you” to the community for all the amazing support they have received.
“Please stop by on May 12, between 2 and 7 pm, to see what we have accomplished together!” says Pat Vailliencourt, who spearheaded the effort to create this new activity center for the seniors in the Caife Aspire building (formerly the Nellie Ackerson school building). The room is the former “round room” that for many years housed the kindergarten classes and that so many who attended school in Manchester remember fondly as one of their very first academic experiences.
This whole affair has been a labor of love for the volunteers who have spent the month of April doing some pretty hard labor in a classroom that hadn’t been used for many years. There are still a few ongoing needs that would be welcomed, if you are thinking about bringing a “room-warming” gift to the Open House next Friday: toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, hand sanitizer, sanitizer wipes, ground coffee, creamer, sugar packets, Kleenex, napkins, paper plates, plastic silverware, dishwashing soap, cleaning supplies, or even a financial donation would be greatly appreciated. All would help with the success of this venture!
And new faces are always welcome, too. If you’re 55 and older, please consider supporting this group by joining. The nominal membership dues are $15 per year. Such a bargain to be able to participate in the many activities the group has to offer, both currently and in the future. Not to mention the social connections, and the meals!
The main entry, which does include a few stairs, is on the Beaufort Street side of the building. A sidewalk leads up to the door and the Senior Activity Center is on your right. Access for the disabled is at the rear of the building, from the parking lot off Wolverine Street. Signage will direct you to the Senior Center.
