Schools start off on a positive note — Keep the Wheel Rolling
by Marsha Chartrand
“We have most assuredly rebuilt the wheel,” says school board member Michael Tindall, who last year teamed with Superintendent Brad Bezeau and MCS staff member Joe Walsh to find a way to improve morale within the district.
“Morale in the district is greatly improved,” Tindall continued. “Life inside and outside the buildings has changed markedly for the better.”
So, now that they’ve accomplished their goal, what’s next?
“We’re going to change it to Keep the Wheel Rolling,” Tindall said. One popular aspect of the Rebuild the Wheel program was honoring one “spoke” of the wheel of MCS staff at each monthly board meeting. Tindall said that will continue, because it has been well received by board, administration, and staff alike.
“The staff especially appreciates words of praise and encouragement,” Tindall said. “It’s definitely needed in today’s world.”
Two weeks ago, the administration and board threw a picnic to kick off the program for the new school year. About 40 people were in attendance, and a positive, relaxing atmosphere helped get everyone prepared for another successful school year.
“I’m encouraged by the camaraderie throughout the district,” Tindall added. “Things are starting off way more positive than they did last year.”
Tindall did note that declining enrollment needs to be looked at on a deeper level, and added that the community needs more affordable housing to be able to grow.
“You hear a lot about school of choice, how it’s taking students from our district,” he said. “Unfortunately, one child leaving Manchester is one too many, but the fact is that we’ve got more children coming into Manchester than leaving. People need to realize that this is true, and we have a great community here with a lot to offer. We need to start with a positive attitude and capitalize on that.”
