Clinton Township Public Library has been awarded the LSTA Public Library Services Grant in the amount of $16,218.

The project will begin on October 1, 2023. Funding from the grant will allow CTPL to build four sensory-friendly study cubicles along with a schedule of monthly technology classes and online tutorials.

The centerpiece of this project will be the creation of sensory-friendly study cubicles. These specially designed spaces will provide a comfortable and focused environment for learners who may benefit from reduced sensory stimulation. Features such as soundproof walls, wobble stools, large-print keyboards, noise-canceling headphones, and touch-screen monitors will ensure that library patrons can concentrate on their studies without distractions.

Sensory-Friendly Inclusion Spaces will be available for all patrons who possess an in-house library card, which is free to all, regardless of residency. Patrons can use the Sensory-Friendly Inclusion Spaces for personal study space, Zoom meetings, small group meetings, or as a space to decompress after high-sensory library events.

In addition to the sensory-friendly study cubicles, CTPL will introduce a series of monthly technology classes and online tutorials. These classes and tutorials will cover a wide range of topics, such as “How to use MeL,” “How to write a cover letter,” “Internet basics,” “Smartphones 101,” and more.

With this project, patrons will gain new knowledge of technology and software products that can assist them in business, education, employment, and entertainment. The one-on-one basics training, tutorials, and classes will collectively address all elements of the objective by providing patrons of all proficiency levels with new knowledge and skills that can be used in a variety of settings or to address a variety of needs. One-on-one basics training will be available by appointment only, with up to 10 one-hour time slots per week.

All patrons involved in classes, tutorials, and trainings will be asked to complete a brief survey at the conclusion.

Project timeline:
October 2023 — Purchasing of all equipment
November 2023 — First virtual tutorial will be posted to CTPL’s website
December 2023 — Sensory-Friendly Inclusion Spaces available
December 2023–September 2024 — Monthly classes will be held and monthly virtual tutorials will be posted to CTPL’s website.

In total, there will be 11 virtual tutorials and 10 in-person classes available. All virtual tutorials will remain on CTPL’s website indefinitely. Keep a close eye on Clinton Township Public Library’s website and Facebook page for more information about Project Sensory-Friendly Inclusion Space.
