Volunteer workdays scheduled at Sharon Hills Preserve
by Sara Swanson
Legacy Land Conservancy has scheduled their fall 2023 volunteer workdays with three days scheduled for Sharon Hills Nature Preserve. They are looking for volunteers to help remove the invasive species autumn olive on Friday, October 6, from 10am to noon; Friday, October 13, from 10am to noon; and Saturday, October 14, from 10am to noon. If you are able to volunteer, please RSVP by filling out the Google Form you can find by going to https://legacylandconservancy.org/events/ and scrolling down until you find the workday you wish to attend.
Volunteers will use loppers and hand-saws to cut back shrubs to two-inch stumps and help haul cut plant material. Legacy will provide tools and work gloves, but you are welcome to bring your own if you have a pair you like. Stumps will be treated with herbicide by Legacy staff to ensure these hardy invasive plants don’t re-sprout in the spring.
Please dress for the weather and in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Pants and closed-toe shoes are a must, regardless of the temperature, to protect from poison ivy and getting scratched up while working outside. Don’t forget a water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray to reduce the risk of exposure to ticks.
The entrance to Sharon Hills Nature Preserve is located on Sharon Hollow Road (between Walker and Washburn Roads). Look for the signs on the east side of the road and park in the grassy parking area. Volunteers will meet at the parking lot on the mornings of the volunteer workdays.
