Public programs for April 2024 at the Waterloo Recreation Area are sponsored by the Waterloo Natural History Association. Programs are presented at the Eddy Discovery Center, located at 17030 Bush Rd, in the Waterloo Recreation Area, 10 minutes north of Sharon Township. To reach the Discovery Center, take M52 north through Chelsea, turn left on Sibley Road, and follow the signs. Advance registration is required for all programs. To register, call the Discovery Center at (734) 475-3170. Spaces are limited. Programs are $2 per person or $5 per family with State Recreation Passport. WNHA members are admitted free.

NIGHT OF THE AMPHIBIANS: 8pm–9:30pm, Saturday, April 6. Join naturalist Carol Strahler this evening for a lively presentation featuring frogs, salamanders, and quivering masses of eggs from local ponds. Find out how you can recognize frogs by their calls. The program will be followed by a walk to a nearby pond to see and hear frogs singing in the night. Bring a flashlight and dress for the weather.

AMAZING ANIMALS AND THEIR ADAPTATIONS: 2pm–3pm, Sunday, April 14. Join us for an entertaining and educational wildlife program as Randy Baker from Naturalist Endeavors brings you a variety of live animals from North, South, and Central America. Learn about their life cycles, adaptations for survival, habitats, and how they fit in with the plants and animals around them.

STRANGE CREATURES OF THE SPRING POND: 2pm–3pm, Sunday, April 21. Come and meet many of the fascinating and little-known creatures that live in our spring ponds—from delicate fairy shrimp to ferocious diving beetles. No boots required, as we will be viewing these in our special “pour-a-ponds” outside on the deck. Wildlife educator Megan Lotz will provide magnifying glasses and help you identify these tiny animals.

BEES AND WANNA-BEES, 2pm–3pm, Sunday, April 28. Do you know how to tell if that buzzing insect flying around your head or nesting in your house is a bee, wasp, or fly? Join Becky Green, Beekeeper and Certified Pollinator Champion, to learn how to spot the difference, and then try your hand at doing so with the Bee or Wanna-Bee challenge. You will also learn to identify the most common bees that you might find taking up residence in or close to your home to help you know when to call your local honeybee expert for help! Becky will also have some of her local honey available for sale.
