Sheriff’s deputy Corporal David Sexton, a familiar face in the City of Manchester, was honored by the Police Officer’s Association of Michigan as its Officer of the Year, for a “hero story” that displayed his skills and averted a true crisis within the County.

“We are honored to share the exemplary service of Washtenaw County Deputy Sheriff’s Association’s Corporal David Sexton, whose swift and judicious actions on August 3rd averted further crisis and exemplified the highest standards of law enforcement professionalism,” said a press release from the POAM.

As Corporal Sexton was patrolling during an overtime shift, an urgent call from Dispatch reported an active shooter situation in Saline. Aware of the situation’s gravity and potential danger, Sexton immediately responded without hesitation. His rapid decision-making, grounded in extensive training and tactical acumen, was pivotal in the following moments.

Upon arrival at the scene, Corporal Sexton positioned himself strategically. Despite the high-stress scenario and the absence of immediate backup, Corporal Sexton managed the situation with safe, unparalleled composure.

The suspect crashed into another vehicle in an attempt to evade capture. It was at this moment that Corporal Sexton’s professionalism shone brightly. Exiting his patrol car, he approached the suspect with his firearm ready while his mind was alert to the unfolding dynamics. As the suspect exited the crashed vehicle and charged toward him, Sexton issued multiple loud verbal commands that were disregarded.

Assessing the situation with remarkable speed, Corporal Sexton recognized the suspect was unarmed and adeptly transitioned to his taser, effectively neutralizing the threat and gaining control of the subject by handcuffing and securing him until additional units arrived.

This decisive action led to the suspect’s successful apprehension and ensured that none of the bystanders who gathered were injured. Corporal Sexton’s ability to de-escalate a potentially lethal confrontation without a single loss of life or injury speaks volumes of his professionalism, judgment, and commitment to policing principles.

“Corporal Sexton’s actions testify to the caliber of officers serving our communities. His situational awareness, tactical skill, and unwavering focus under pressure safeguarded the community from further harm. We present to you the 2024 Police Officer of the Year Award,” the POAM presentation concluded.

“It’s an honor to serve the Manchester community,” Sexton said in response to his congratulatory message. “Thank you so much.”

Sexton’s actions were a perfect example of how Washtenaw County attempts to train its deputies in a crisis situation — utilizing not only their policing skills but their knowledge of reacting to a mental health crisis; in the process saving lives. The county and the community appreciates his knowledge, experience, and clear thinking in time. We thank Corporal Sexton for his brave acts.
