With the filing deadline passed, we now have a clear idea what the November school board race will look like and a new question emerges: What happens when only 3 candidates file for 4 open seats?

The four seats that are up for election are currently held by president Brandon Woods; treasurer Corey Horky; trustee Ryan Novess; and recently appointed trustee Dan Budd. Of the four, only Woods is running to retain his seat. He is joined on the ballot by newcomers Colleen Shoenfeld and Jennifer Caszatt. Which leaves one open seat.

This seat may end up being filled by a write-in candidate. Anyone interested in running for the school board has until October 25 at 4pm to file as a write-in candidate by submitting a Declaration of Intent with the Washtenaw County Clerk. A write-in candidate’s name will not appear on the ballot, but if they’ve filed, they will accumulate valid write-in votes and can be elected to the school board.

As of Sunday evening, no one has filed as a write-in candidate.
