If you think getting stuck in a snowbank in Michigan is bad, you might want to consider being Stuck in Tibet with John Diekis on Wednesday, February 19, from 1pm to 3pm, at the Chelsea Senior Center. Mr. Diekis will take you either in-person or by Zoom on his sturdy Indian-built Royal Enfield motorcycle into the high Himalayas through Nepal and Tibet. You will visit the Dalai Lama’s Potala Palace and the Mount Everest base camp. However, you might also end up on the “wrong” side of the Tibetan border in China.

Another, less perilous trip, highlights Impressions of Kyoto and Cities of Japan’s Seto Inland Sea. Edie Wiarda, her husband, and her son spent a year in Kobe, the mountain-top city ringed by the Seto inland sea. Her in-person and Zoom class at the Chelsea Retirement Community from 1pm to 3pm on February 21, will take us to Kyoto, home of 17 UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites, then back to Kobe and over to Takamatsu on the island of Shikoku and the two castle cities, Okayama and Himeji.

One of the good things about winter is that we get to eat almost anything without worrying about getting into a swimsuit. Beginning on February 25, from 1pm to 4pm, at the Chelsea Retirement Community, Tamara Elkhatib will show us how to turn leftovers into delicious soups and stews. And the fun thing about this class is that you get to eat the lesson.

Then, on February 28, at the Chelsea Senior Center from 1pm to 3pm, Hank Muir and Chris Lenehan will begin a four-part in-person class Exploring Musical Theatre. In each of the four classes in this popular series, a film will be presented preceded by a brief history of the production plus information about the authors, composers, difficulties, and lots of interesting trivia that have become one of the hallmarks of these presentations.

Catalogs containing more information on these and ALI’s other winter/spring classes, as well as the registration form, will soon be mailed and will be available at libraries, grocery stores, and a variety of other locations throughout the Five Healthy Towns area, as well as at info@ALIMichigan.org. Or use this QR code:
