Manchester Jr/Sr High School is proud to announce their February Students of the Month. These students have gone above and beyond in both their academic achievements and contributions to their school community.

Seventh grader Aaron Sangster does everything with a smile on his face and a positive attitude. He helps others whenever he can and works hard. Aaron’s older brothers also attend Manchester Jr/Sr High, and their support encourages him to always do his best. In fact, it was at his brother’s encouragement that Aaron put his hat in the ring for Student of the Month. “My brother has been wanting me to be Student of the Month,” Aaron said. “I want to make him proud.”

Eighth grader Rion Bednarski admits that he can get “a bit off-track at times,” but he more than makes up for it through hard work and dedication. Rion strives to get good grades and tries to help his classmates understand the content they are learning. He also tries to brighten their day by making jokes or giving compliments. “I can’t think of anyone who strictly dislikes me, or at least can’t tolerate me,” Rion said. In addition to trying his best to be helpful in school, Rion also helps at community events. Because his dad is a firefighter, this often means helping him with things like loading the trucks.

Like Bednarski, freshman class president Elena Houttekier works to get good grades and is proud to maintain a high GPA. Elena shows respect to everyone she meets, from classmates to teachers, and is always kind to those around her. She takes pride in her commitment to community service through DECA and student council, as well as her participation in band and the varsity equestrian team.

Sophomore class treasurer Kayla Pauly is also a hard-working student, striving to put forth her best work each day. She is kind to others, respects her peers and teachers, and participates in class. Kayla is also a member of Link Crew, working hard to ensure that the seventh-grade students are comfortable and successful throughout the year.

Junior Braiden Brummitt always has a smile for everyone he meets. Full of energy and eager to share a laugh with his peers, Braiden is in charge of the Joke of the Day over the daily announcements — a job he takes very seriously. He also helps with various tasks around the school — stacking chairs in the lunchroom, sorting mail in the office, and delivering coffee to staff.

Senior Angelina Helwig has an incredible amount of empathy for her peers and what others are going through, and she doesn’t hesitate to step up and offer her assistance. From getting help for a classmate who wasn’t feeling well to taking the time to hold the hand of a classmate who was overwhelmed, she has gone out of her way this month (and in other months) to be there for the people around her. “Our weaknesses don’t define our strength,” Angel said, preferring to focus on the positives — strength, resilience, courage, and leadership.
