Manchester Jr/Sr High School is proud to announce their March Students of the Month. These students have gone above and beyond in both their academic achievements and contributions to their school community.
Seventh grader Layla Line is a good role model. She is involved in the school and a three-sport athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She shows cows for 4-H, does volunteer work for her church and neighbors, and studies hard to maintain good grades. Layla exudes positivity and always tries to offer words of encouragement to those around her.
Like Layla, eighth grader Katelyn Martell tries to stay positive. She has overcome a lot over the years and has a greater appreciation for a lot of things in her life. She has made more friends and built stronger friendships this year, maintains good grades, and always tries to be kind and helpful to others.
Freshman Audrina Lauer has worked very hard this year to make sure her work is completed and turned in on time. She is kind to those around her, always trying to pick up people she sees getting knocked down. Audrina’s teachers have witnessed tremendous growth, seeing her take on leadership roles in classes, helping her fellow students with projects, and making sure others are being heard.
Sophomore Sophie Houttekier demonstrates an incredible amount of responsibility for someone her age. She has worked hard in all of her classes this year, volunteered to help with several parts of the recent band festival, and showed initiative in her journalism class by taking pictures of Mr. Smith’s botany class without being assigned yet. Sophie studies, starts on her homework during class, and has made more effort to really focus on her work. Sophie does her best to keep up, but also has a healthy mindset when it comes to school. “I always tell people that I believe in them, and that they can push through no matter what,” Sophie said. “I believe in the saying ‘your grades don’t define you.’ I hope everybody knows that about themselves.”
Junior Grant Johnson is a leader and a role model for many students. As track has been starting up, Grant has been leading a lot of things, such as warmups and workouts. He has also been active in the National Honor Society, and helped out at Riverside on various occasions. He strives to keep his grades high. Grant was also one of the lead scorers for his team in the recent staff vs. students basketball game, demonstrating the dunking skills that have made him something of a living legend at the school this year.
Like Grant, senior Jase Punches also played a big role in the staff vs. students basketball game, making some big moves and always keeping the staff on their toes. Sports are important to Jase, who has participated in basketball and baseball for many years, saying, “These sports not only helped me improve my athletic skills, but also taught me a great deal about teamwork and leadership. Balancing my studies and sports keeps me motivated and excited to be a part of the Manchester community.” Jase is a dedicated student who has achieved Summa Cum Laude honor roll status. He is a proud member of the National Honor Society, which is very important to him. “It allows me to maintain high academic standards while also giving back,” he explains. “I enjoy volunteering in our community by reading with younger students, playing dodgeball with the kids at Riverside’s Fun Night, and helping out local charities supplying food to those in need.”
