The popular Wooden Nickels program is making a welcome return to the Manchester area this season, offering residents increased access to fresh, locally grown produce.

In a partnership with the Manchester Wellness Coalition, 5 Healthy Towns, and the 2025 Manchester Farmers Market, the Manchester Community Resource Center (CRC) will be distributing Wooden Nickels to eligible community members. The market will operate every Thursday from 3 to 6pm, starting May 15.

Eligible shoppers can receive up to $20 worth of Wooden Nickels twice per month to purchase fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, honey, eggs, and plant starts. The program aims to supplement fresh produce options for eligible Manchester residents and to increase access to nutritious foods.

Wooden Nickels will only be available at the CRC table at the farmers market and are specifically designed for purchasing fresh, healthy foods. They cannot be used for prepared foods, baked goods, or non-food items.

The program also offers special assistance for seniors with mobility or transportation challenges within city limits, providing delivery service twice per month. Those interested in learning more about eligibility requirements or arranging delivery should call the CRC directly at 734-428-7722.

With spring’s arrival, the return of both the Farmers Market and the Wooden Nickels program signals a renewed community commitment to supporting local agriculture while ensuring all residents have access to fresh, healthy foods.
