Letter to the editor: Acknowledging a loss for our community
6-15-2025
This is a letter of appreciation to our community and also to acknowledge a loss for our community. On Saturday I learned that our Flower Garden business owner, Susie, has passed away. A long time ago Mike and Sue Helton took over the flower shop in town. Together they served our town as we celebrated birthdays, graduations, and holidays. They were there with and for us in our times of loss and grief. When Mike passed away, years ago, Susie took over the operation of the Flower Garden. She was a determined, energetic and hard-working florist. People enjoyed chatting with her as she put together a last minute or special request bouquet. She managed the shop single-handedly for years.
At some point Susie began to have health issues. She had the desire to continue with the hard work and long hours, but it became too much for one person. She had a loyal following and soon a group of local ladies stepped in to be the volunteer group I fondly called “The Flower Garden Ladies.” They covered for Susie when she couldn’t be at the shop and prepared arrangements and made deliveries. The Flower Garden Ladies were all friendly and helpful and seemed to enjoy their time in the shop. I am grateful to each of them for their help when I needed something. I am thankful for their kindness and compassion as they quite literally took over for Susie when she became ill and could no longer work. Susie was really something and I love that The Flower Garden Ladies were there for her and for our community.
Sincere thanks,
Linda Mussio
