The letter below was sent out via e-mail today to parents and guardians of the high school students from Kevin Mowrer, high school principal.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are very sad to announce that there was a tragic incident with a ninth grade student at his grandparents’ home on Monday, November 18th.

Our Crisis Response Plan has been activated to maintain a safe and calm environment at school. Our emphasis at school has been to assist our students and staff in expressing their grief appropriately and in processing what occurred. Our team was made up of social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals. They saw over 80 students yesterday and continue to follow up with them today.

We have had three teacher meetings and numerous emails and updates for our certified faculty and support staff. We’ve had our counselor’s email hkolcz@mcs.k12.mi.us on every board in the building.

The tricky part of any situation like this is balancing support, privacy, and communication. Thank you for your support in helping us do that.

As parents and guardians, we encourage you to talk with your children about this tragedy. Allow them to express their feelings and concerns. Reaffirm your love for them and reassure them that you are willing to listen to their fears and problems. Please feel free to email either myself (kmowrer@mcs.k12.mi.us) or Ms. Kolcz is you know of any students who are struggling.

Please feel free to call me if we can be of more assistance (734-428-7333, ext 1100).

Sincerely,
