badge-largeAs the temperature finally stays above freezing for more than five minutes a day and the snow slowly disappears, the Washtenaw County Sheriff Department wishes to remind everyone of the laws associated with operating a Moped.

Moped rules of the road:

  • Must be at least 15 years of age and have a valid moped license through the Secretary of State, if you do not have a license.
  • Moped’s must be registered if operated on public property
  • Must follow all traffic laws
  • If under 19 years of age you must wear a helmet
  • Only one occupant/ no passengers
  • Cannot ride two abreast (meaning two mopeds cannot travel side by side)
  • You cannot drive on sidewalk or bicycle path
  • Never allow an unlicensed operator to use your moped.
  • Wear a properly-fastened safety helmet when riding a moped on a public road, if under age 19.
  • Sit on a regular permanently attached seat.
  • Keep both hands on the handle grips. Never hang on to another vehicle for a “tow.”
  • Ride on the far right edge of the road, out of the flow of traffic, when possible.
  • Make sure all moped equipment is in good working order.

The Sheriff’s Office wants you to have a fun but safe season, and will be enforcing the laws for everyone’s safety.

If you have any questions or for more information, go to the Secretary of State website.
