DNR Seeks Volunteers for Walker Tavern Historic Site, Will Host Orientation and Training on May 3
While this tavern is outside of Manchester, we felt that it was close enough that some would still be interested–and it’s kinda cool!
From the Michigan Department of Natural Resources:
The Friends of Walker Tavern will host volunteer orientation and training at Walker Tavern Historic Site, near Brooklyn, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3.
“We have an ambitious schedule of events this summer at Walker Tavern Historic Site and need volunteers with a variety of talents to assist with our various programs and activities,” said Friends of Walker Tavern President Bonnie McJennett. “If you have an interest in history and want to meet new people and share your skills, we hope you’ll join us.”
The May 3 session will include a site orientation, a full tour and information about responsibilities of volunteers and staff. Light refreshments will be provided.
Walker Tavern Historic Site is located in Cambridge State Historic Park, at the corner of US-12 and M-50. It interprets travel along these key routes from the pioneer era to the Roaring ’20s. The site preserves the memory of Michigan pioneers Sylvester and Lucy Walker, who operated the white frame tavern in the 1830s and ’40s. The story of the Frederick Hewitt family, who ran a tourist stop at the tavern in the 20th century, is presented in the Colonial Revival home they built on the site in the 1920s.
For more information about this volunteer event contact Bonnie McJennett at 517-592-3815 or Friends of Walker Tavern secretary Laurie Bolak at 517-467-2577 or mabo_16@yahoo.com.
Volunteers contributing 100 or more hours of time throughout the summer will be recognized at the end of the season with an annual membership to the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing. Volunteers also receive discounts at various Michigan Historical Museum stores and special events. For a calendar of Walker Tavern Historic Site events visit their website.
Beginning with the 2014 season, a Recreation Passport is required to enter Cambridge Junction Historic State Park and the Walker Tavern Historic Site. The Recreation Passport, which took the place of the state park “window sticker” system, is required to enter Michigan state parks, recreation areas, state forest campgrounds, nonmotorized state trailhead parking areas and state boat launches. A Recreation Passport can be obtained when renewing vehicle registrations each year at the Secretary of State. It costs $11 for vehicles and $5 for motorcycles. A Recreation Passport can also be purchased on-site at Walker Tavern through a self-registration system. Nonresidents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($31.10 annual; $8.55 daily) at any state park or recreation area or (annual pass only) here. Learn more here.
Walker Tavern is one of 11 nationally accredited museums administered by the Michigan Historical Center, an agency within the Department of Natural Resources. It is located at the junction of US-12 and M-50, east of Jackson. For more information, call 517-467-4401 or visit their website.
