Manchester High School’s annual trip to Adrian College took place on Wednesday, April 30, 2014.  The students toured the library, a sample dorm room, a lecture hall, the wellness complex, the football field, and the radio station.

According to Principal Mowrer, they enjoyed an all-you-can-eat lunch and Joe VanGeison, the tour guide, did a great job taking them around.

This was the fourth annual trip for Manchester sophomores to visit Adrian College and is made possible by funding from Worth Repeating.

The tour is part of a college visit series designed by Kevin Mowrer to introduce the students to different types of colleges and encourage parents and students to plan for college after graduation.

As a result, the number of students who attend college after graduation has risen from 70% in 2006 to 95% in 2012.  Principal Mowrer indicated that, “Part of preparing students for college is creating opportunities for them to see themselves on campus and consider the options for school.  We take all 8th through 10th grade students to Eastern Michigan University, University of Michigan, and Adrian College to expose them to the different types of college experiences.”

On this tour, MHS students learned about small liberal arts colleges and their affordability. They also thought about their plans for the future.  One student indicated that before he visited Adrian College, he had his mind set to attend a larger institution.  He always thought that smaller schools would provide an inferior experience.  The visit to Adrian College, however, opened up his options and he is now considering a smaller school.  “I like the idea of knowing everybody and everybody knowing me” – very similar to being here in Manchester.  At smaller schools students often find that they always have a study partner, a support system, and someone to keep them accountable.

Great job Principal Mowrer and Worth Repeating for this wonderful opportunity for our teens!
