Knights of Columbus Thanks Community and Volunteers

Last month, the Knights of Columbus held their 38th annual annual Tootsie Roll Drive.  Members from over 200 councils throughout the state hit the streets at local intersections and asked people to make a donation to support people with intellectual disabilities and receive a tootsie roll.

The Michigan Knights of Columbus run one of the largest drives in the country and Knights in the Manchester and Clinton areas are part of that effort. This year, the community of Manchester raised $1,700 and Clinton raised $1,000.  The proceeds from this year’s drive benefits the St. Louis Center in Chelsea and the Milton C. Porter Education Center in Lenawee County.

The St. Louis Center is a residential, family living and learning environment providing for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  The center was originally built by the Archdiocese of Detroit in 1960 and is administered by the Servants of Charity Congregation of Catholic missionary priests and brothers who have dedicated their lives to caring for the “poorest of the poor” of the world, especially persons with developmental disabilities.  See more of their history here.

The Milton C. Porter Education Center serves students from birth to 26 years who have been identified, evaluated and found eligible for programs and/or services under the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education. Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education defines eligibility for special education services within 13 categories of disability.

In the past, the Knights of Columbus have held the drive once every year, always on the week before Easter. However, because of difficulties caused by the cold weather and timing of spring break, next year the Tootsie Roll M.I. Drive will be held in October on the Friday after Columbus Day.

 A heartfelt “thank you” to the residents of the Manchester and Clinton areas, who so graciously donated to the Knights of Columbus “M.I. Tootsie Roll Drive” for children and adults with developmental disabilities, and also to the many Knights who sacrificed their time to make this event a great success.

 The proceeds from this event will be divided between the St. Louis Center in Chelsea and the Milton C. Porter School in Lenawee County.

 Special thanks to the Sharon United Methodist Church, Manchester Market, and the Manchester Marathon Station for the use of their facilities.
