CAS Teaching Fellows to Present Chamber Music Series
As a part of the Cultural Art Strings (CAS) summer day camp, the CAS has hired four Fellowship students to teach. The fellowship program is made possible through a grant by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. In addition to teaching, the Fellows will present three chamber events along with CAS faculty. Daniel Winnick, the Teaching Fellow Project Manager, said “The upcoming CAS summer concerts are an opportunity for us to share the music we love with the community of Manchester and our goal was to craft three unique programs that show off the beauty and versatility of string instruments.”
The first concert, “Motley’s The Only Wear”, was on June 14. The audience got to hear everything from string quartets by Beethoven and Shostakovich to the beautiful Appalachian Waltz by American fiddler Mark O’Connor.
On June 18, at the Manchester Community Fair, the chamber concert will be “Weaving Harmonies.” Music that spins impressive textures out of simple conceptual threads will be explored. In this concert, CAS faculty and fellows will be joined by special guests Elliott Ross, clarinetist, and Xavier Verna, percussionist, in a program that pairs Bach fugues with fiddle tunes. Audiences will also be treated to a sultry tango by the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla.
The final concert, “A Musical High Wire”, will be at the Wild Acorn on June 24th. Teaching Fellows will push their instruments to the limit at this final show with faculty, playing an early string quartet by Beethoven and a rarely heard quintet by the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev.
