The week of August 11th, Klager’s cafeteria will come alive with Manchester’s 2014 Safety Town Program. Safety Town is designed to teach many areas of personal safety to children entering kindergarten in the fall. Students learn traffic and bus safety as well as fire, seat belt, stranger, water, gun, poison, and electrical safety through stories, projects, songs, games, movies and excursions.

There will be special guests all week including the Manchester Fire Department, Manchester Community Schools Transportation Department, GTE with Louie the Lightening Bug, Klager Elementary principal, Jennifer Mayes and the Injury Prevention Program from Mott Children’s Hospital. The Injury Prevention Program will talk to the children about car seat safety and will fit each child with a bike helmet to wear when they ride the bikes during the week, in addition, they provided scholarships for local Head Start students. On Friday, the children will be able to take their helmet home with them.

The program runs 8:30-11:30am each day that week culminating in a graduation ceremony at the end of the session on Friday. It costs $69 for the whole week. Safety Town is headed up by Beckie Brewis, coordinator of Manchester’s First Steps-Parents As Teachers program and Early On Services and Paula Karwowski, Manchester Early Childhood Center Preschool Teacher.

Safety Town works in collaboration with Manchester Kids Club Summer Camp to provide a full day of child care that week when needed by parents who work full time. In order to register for this extended program, parents must contact Kelly Ball at 428-9711 x1013 to sign-up ahead of time, ensuring appropriate staffing will be in place.

If your child is entering kindergarten this fall and has not yet registered for Safety Town, you can still do so by contacting Beckie at 428-9711 x1343 or via email at bbrewis@mcs.k12.mi.us. Children must be preregistered to attend.
