Manchester is now home to two “little free libraries”, stocked with free books thanks to the Manchester District Library and the Friends of the Library.

Little Free Libraries are small kiosks about the size of a large birdhouse.  They can be anchored to a post or a wall.  The Library’s two kiosks are mounted on posts — one outside Linda’s Diner, the other outside of the pre-school entrances at the Ackerson Building. They were installed by LB Hilbert, an active Friends of the Library member.

The main difference between the books in the “regular” library and those in the little free library is that you don’t have to check out or return the little free library books.  They are yours to keep.  If you see something you like, it’s yours.

The idea behind the little free libraries is “take one, leave one.”  The library maintains them and keeps them stocked with books, but patrons are urged to leave books as well.  Little free libraries are for books that you enjoyed that you think others will too.

Correction: We originally left out that the kiosks were installed by LB Hillbert. Sorry about that!
