The 2014 Free Prom Dress Boutique.

Do you have a bridesmaid dress in the back of your closet that you are never going to wear again but you just can’t quite bring yourself to sell it at a garage sale? Are your daughters out of college but their prom dresses are still in your basement? Finally there is a good cause right here in Manchester that you can dig those dresses out for!

The Manchester Ladies Society will be holding their second annual “Free Prom Dress Boutique” on March 21st and 22nd. Once again this year girls will be able to come browse, try-on, and leave with a dress for free. But the Ladies Society is in need of dresses! If you have a clean formal dress you would like to donate, bring it to the front desk of the library during regular operating hours. They are also accepting dress shoes and jewelry.

This year, dress donations are tax deductible! Donors will receive a recipt they can save for tax purposes.

Last year the Ladies Society was able to collect about 85 dresses and had 20 go home with girls. While the library does accept dress donations year round, since prom last year they’ve only received a couple. They are hoping more dresses will come in in the next couple of months so that they are able to offer as wide of a selection as they could last year.

While the idea started as a recycling program, to cut down on the environmental impact of purchasing a dress to wear one time, there is also a financial benefit to the idea. Formal dresses purchased new cost hundreds of dollars. Girls often end up borrowing a dress from a friend’s closet to wear to prom. The boutique works the same way, but on a larger scale with more selection.

If you would like to volunteer to work at the boutique, would like to help set-up/decorate the night before or have another idea to help make this event special, contact Jessica Bushaw at manchesterladiessociety@gmail.com.
