Washtenaw County Sheriff Office along with other law enforcement and community agencies will sponsor gun safety week June 21-27.

Every law enforcement agency in Washtenaw County has joined together with other organizations to help make the county and its residents safer, by holding a Gun Safety Week June 21 – 27, 2015, as passed by a resolution of the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners.

The purpose of Washtenaw County Gun Safety Week is to educate and raise awareness about issues related to gun safety and encourage responsible gun ownership.

Local law enforcement agencies, including the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office located in the lower level of the Manchester Village Hall at 912 City Road, will be giving away FREE gun locks to the public. The Sherriff’s Office can be reached at (734) 971-8400. Please contact them (or your local agency) if you would like a free gun lock. The agencies will have information about gun safety and how residents can help keep themselves and their families safe.

County law enforcement agencies and community partners will hold a press conference to help raise awareness about responsible firearm ownership and publicize Gun Safety Week 2015. Representatives will talk about how to keep the community, families and children safer. The press conference will take place at 11 a.m. today (Monday) in front of the main entrance to the WCSO, 2201 Hogback, Ann Arbor.

Groups from the mental health community, organizations concerned with gun safety, and members of the faith community also will partner to support Gun Safety Week 2015 to help raise awareness and increase public safety.

Law enforcement agencies, members of the criminal justice community and community groups that are collaborating to support Gun Safety Week 2015 include: Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office; Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Saline, Ypsilanti, Milan, and Northfield Police Departments; Pittsfield Department of Public Safety; Michigan State Police; U of M and EMU Police Departments; Washtenaw County Government, Prosecutor’s Office, and Office of Public Defender; Physicians to Prevent Gun Violence; Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America; Washtenaw Alive Suicide Prevention Coalition; SAFE House; Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice; WCSO Council of Clergy; and Community Support and Treatment Services (CSTS).
