Changes Coming in Village Trash and Recycling Pickup

Two years ago, Manchester Village Council voted to leave the Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority and subsequently contracted with a private firm for curbside recycling within the village. This change created a climate that made recycling more convenient and significantly increased village residents’ use of recycling service.

When village administration began seeking bids for continued service, the most important consideration was making sure they hired one contractor that could handle both unlimited trash and recycling services at the best possible price.

Modern Waste Systems of Napoleon was the low bidder and representatives of the family-owned local company attended the June 1 council meeting. Recycling services with Modern began July 1 and new 65-gallon recycling carts will be delivered within the next few weeks. Residents may keep the smaller green recycle bins or return them to the village hall.

Trash services will not change over until August 1, with new 96-gallon garbage containers delivered prior to that time. Exact dates will be announced by the village as soon as Modern Waste has an adequate number of containers available for all households in the village. Allied Waste, the current company serving the village, will remove the current containers at their last scheduled pickup July 29.

Collection will remain on Wednesdays and residents are asked to have both containers at the curb by 7 a.m. on trash days.

During weeks in which a holiday falls before Wednesday, collection day will switch to Thursday.

A Village newsletter will be distributed later this month with more instructions for the new curbside garbage and recycling program, as well as a handy list of what can and cannot be recycled under the new company.
