Second Annual Young Guns vs Sheriffs Trap Shoot
Winds were a bit stronger than favorable, but many traps shattered in the air during the Second Annual Manchester Young Guns vs Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department Trap Shoot. Hosted by the Manchester Young Guns at the Manchester Sportsman’s Club, a good sized crowd gathered for a pig roast lunch, then a demonstration of skill as 10 Young Guns and 5 officers took part in a trap shoot and two fun games. Coach Mike Hughes came up with the idea for the event last year as both a community event and as “a chance for the kids and sheriffs to see each other in a different light.”
The strong wind made the event tricky, with traps flying smoothly until they hit a gust, then jumping straight up. The Sheriffs took the unpredictable in good fun, a few even hitting special traps and winning a box of ammo. When the student’s turn came, they were a bit more serious, and came out on top for the day.
The Manchester Young Guns had a successful year. Two squads competed in the State Championship, taking 2nd and 3rd places, with sophomore Nickalis Schmidt hitting an amazing 92 out of 100 traps. Placing so well is an accomplishment, as the Young Guns competed against 3 students from the surrounding area who have taken part in Olympic training. A full squad competed at Nationals in Sparta, Illinois as well.
After Saturday’s shoot, awards from the 2015 season were presented, pins for hitting 25 & 50 traps in a row, plaques, and varsity letters.
