U of M Softball Icon Seegert Returns for 2nd Year of MAYS Camp
Through rain and shine Manchester Area Youth Sports (MAYS) girls’ softball camp enjoyed another successful year. Attendance was up and 31 girls, 3rd-8th grade, learned how to improve their game under the instruction of local legend Alicia Seegert. Seegert, a Manchester native, played catcher for University of Michigan and holds a place in their Athletic Hall of Honor. (Check out the Mirror’s previous coverage of Seegert HERE.)
This is the second year Seegert, who is the varsity softball coach in Saline, has run this three-day camp where girls learn all aspects of the sport. Seegert is a hands-on instructor, who makes sure every girl gets a chance to experience each part of the sport. She even personally demonstrated how to slide into base using a slip’n’slide.
In coordination with Manchester Area Youth Sports (MAYS) organizer Laurie Luckhardt and Manchester’s varsity softball coach Nichole Jackson , the decision was made this year to open the camp to participants from Saline. In addition to the six Saline girls who attended, Saline also provided four student coaches who joined two students from Manchester who volunteered their time to coach.
With the encouragement of new attendees who had never played softball before, and higher attendance numbers, camp organizer Luckhardt hopes to open next year’s camp up to other surrounding communities. Luckhardt knows how important it is to continue supporting girls sports everywhere.
