Last Wednesday, October 7th, about 40 Klager Elementary students and lots of parents were joined by teachers, the principal, Village Council members, the Village manager, community members and some of the Manchester High School Marching Band with their instruments for a walk up Ann Arbor Hill Road from Chi Bro Park to Klager. The band playing marching music lead the kids all the way to the front door before continuing to march to the high school. Despite a small traffic jam caused by parents pulling in to Chi Bro, everything went smoothly.

Organizer, Kathy O’Mara, reported that participation numbers were up from last year and that this year many more teachers joined in on the walk which helped keep the kids safe and things moving. She continued, “The students were so excited and talked about the event all day. I am hoping that the buzz continues. We are promoting the importance of exercising. I am hoping to help kids realize that getting their day started with a good walk to school will help them to be ready to focus on their school work.”

This event and the weekly Walk to School Wednesdays are sponsored by Safe Routes to School and 5 Healthy Towns Foundation. While this walk celebrated a once a year, international event, students meet every Wednesday at 7:45 am at Chi Bro and walk to Klager. O’Mara stated, “I would like to let people know that the program would not work with out the support of community members and parents who join us each week in keeping students safe.”
