Shake Your Mailbox this Week to Prevent Winter Damage

wcrc_logo_square_copy_0_0Manchester experienced its first frost this week, which means snow can’t be far behind. Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC), is asking county residents to “Shake their mailboxes” in preparation for winter. Although plows travel slowly, the force from the snow and ice they clear can be enough to topple loose mailboxes.

“We know that winter damage to mailboxes is inconvenient to residents and we want to minimize the problem. Simply shaking your mailbox and tightening screws can go a long way in keeping it secure during the winter season,” said Jim Harmon, Director of Operations at the WCRC.

The WCRC will replace existing mailboxes damaged during snow removal, but only if it is directly caused by road commission equipment. Mailboxes damaged by the force of debris being plowed away are the owner’s responsibility.
