Last week Manchester (zip code 48158) had its first week with no new COVID-19 cases since mid-February. In February we had one week with no cases between two waves of outbreaks. Other than that week, you would have to go back to last fall and the start of the first wave to find a week with no new cases. Although last week was the first week since the second wave began that we had zero new cases, Manchester did report just one new case each week for the previous four weeks leading up to last week.

New positive cases numbers have dropped statewide. This drop mirrors the drop from a year ago, as last June, long before the vaccines were available, case rates plummeted after the initial outbreak in Michigan  in March, April and May. The decline at that time was attributed to both restrictions put in place and warmer weather which meant more people spent time outside where the coronavirus is less likely to spread.

Although this time around there are very few restrictions in place, the state has additional protection it did not have in 2020 — 61% of all residents 16+ years old now have had at least one dose of the vaccine. Manchester has slightly less than the average with Manchester falling in the category of between 50% and 60% of residents 16+ having received at least one dose.
