As kids return to school Monday, the Manchester Community Schools Board of Education convened August 16th in a regular session to discuss and vote on proposed school plans, handbooks, and policies ahead of the upcoming school year.

The regular meeting began with Vice President Mike Austin approving the minutes of the meeting with support from Trustee Kody Naylor.

No members of the public gave public comments.

The school board began with accepting the resolution to sell the Ackerson Building to Caife Aspire Incorporated. The property will be used for STEM, student trades, lawful education, and for other means. The motion was approved unanimously.

The school board also approved the MCS Return to School Plan 2021 -2022 and the Employee Handbook ahead of the start of the school year. According to the Return to School Plan, masks will remain optional, as they have been throughout summer programs. The district will also continue to report positive cases and conduct contact tracing to report to the Washtenaw County Health Department. The district will also continue to keep a weekly and monthly dashboard of positive cases and students who are in quarantine. There will also be remote learning options.

Three community members — James Stewart, Teresa Herron, William Brinkman — also gave public comments to address the role of masks in the classroom, with some opposed and against kids wearing masks.

New hires include Benjamin Bruursema as Tech Director, Jenna Perkins as Daycare Assistant, Christopher Provey as Kids Club Assistant, Katheryn Altherr as a paraprofessional, and Amie Armstrong as Freshman Advisor.

Personnel exiting the district included teacher Elaine Aldrich and bus monitor Mya Clarke.

The Manchester Community School Board of Education will meet next on September 20, 2021. A link to watch the youtube live stream will be available on the school board’s website: https://www.manchesterschools.us/board-of-education/.
