At the age of 18, Celeste Sangster has her sights set on making a positive impact in the lives of as many people as possible. A Michigan native, Sangster grew up just minutes away from the University of Michigan. She is currently enrolled in the Midwife (direct entry) program at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore, Wisconsin. “I want to work with women in underserved areas all over the world to provide healthcare during pregnancy, birth and postpartum and advocate for birth justice, even distribution of medical supplies and proper training of medical professionals,” she said.

Not only does she want to serve in that capacity, but starting in the spring 2022 semester, Sangster will be enrolling in the college’s new Nonprofit Leadership program. She has a head start, as she was recently elected president of the Southwest Tech Student Senate. “So far it has been great,” she said. “I am excited to go to more of the student events and dive deeper into the senate.”

Sangster is settling in comfortably on campus. She is living in student housing, sharing a four-bedroom apartment with three roommates and experiencing everything Southwest Tech has to offer. “There are just so many opportunities to meet other students, meet the teachers, meet the advisors, get to know everyone and form connections and they are so easily accessible to us as students,” she said.

In a recent scholarship appreciation letter, Sangster explained that she is part of a large family. “We struggled financially my entire childhood because my mom didn’t work, in order to homeschool us while my dad alone worked to provide for a family of eleven. From a young age, my siblings and I were taught the importance of hard work to provide for yourself.”

Sangster also attended public school on occasion and has a diverse educational background. Those experiences make her appreciate all the resources that are offered to the students at Southwest Tech. “Overall, the priority that they place on the students here has far exceeded my expectations and my experiences in my really diverse educational background,” she said.

Upon graduation from Southwest Tech, Sangster plans to earn her bachelor’s in health sciences, with a minor in health disparities in society. After that, “my dream is to be accepted into the Johns Hopkins Master of Public Health Program, concentrating on maternal and child healthcare.”

“I couldn’t pick a better building block than this school (Southwest Tech) to help me get to where I need to go,” said Sangster. “I am going to embrace my ambitions.”
