Spaghetti dinner to raise funds for medical expenses for MHS alumna

by Marsha Chartrand
It has been an emotional year for longtime Manchester teacher Amie Armstrong. Last November, her world was rocked when her sister, Karen Bush, was diagnosed with Stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). Karen is 51 years old and a graduate of Manchester Community Schools Class of 1989.
And if you know Amie, you know she is not one to sit around and bemoan fate. She’s going to give it everything she’s got. And that’s what she’s been doing for her sister.
Over the course of the last year, Karen has undergone many surgeries, radiation, and currently has weekly chemotherapy — all with Amie by her side. Due to the advancement of this cancer, Karen is no longer able to work. They’ve recently learned that the tumor is inoperable and terminal.
And, of course, medical bills and other expenses are piling up. So Amie has come up with an idea to help relieve this stress so Karen knows she has the support of extended family and friends and the community, and she doesn’t have to worry about the bills.
On November 5, from 4pm to 8pm, Amie is organizing a benefit spaghetti dinner that will be held at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds. For just $15 at the door, the menu will include spaghetti, bread, desserts, and drinks. There will also be a silent auction (“Which looks amazing!” Amie adds). All the money raised will go toward Karen’s medical bills and other expenses.
“Come support Karen and help relieve her stress and she doesn’t have to worry about her bills,“ Amie says. “If you know Karen at all, you know she’s a very loving and giving person. Let’s give back to her and raise funds for this very good cause.“
