We all know the importance of healthy eating, and teaching our kids early how to eat well is critical to their future health. A new program in Manchester Community Schools, one that is being implemented statewide, is giving kids an incentive to make better choices when it comes to their school breakfasts and lunches.

The state of Michigan is funding free school meals (breakfast and lunch) for kids in the Great Start Ready Program through 12th grade in public education through a program called Michigan School Meals.

This is different from the former Free and Reduced lunches, and has specific requirements for students to choose their meal selections.

Under the Michigan School Meals Program, students must take a fruit or vegetable with their entrée to qualify for a free lunch. Extra items such as milk, bottled drinks, a la carte entrees, additional entrees, and snacks are not included in this program but will be available for purchase.

Breakfast is available every school day this year (including half days) and will be served before and up to the first bell. Breakfast will include grab-and-go items, fresh fruits, low-fat milk, and a variety of other sides. Lunch is available each full day of school. Lunch will include the entrée, fruits and vegetables, and choice of low-fat milk.

“It is still very important that families fill out the application for Summer EBT and Education Benefits (formerly Free and Reduced Application),” said Lisa Garrison, Director of Dining Services at Manchester Community Schools. “This information is needed to ensure the school receives state and federal funding for education programs. Without this information, Manchester Community Schools could lose important state funding for educational programs that our students are entitled to.”

Families are encouraged to continue to fill out the online application for Summer EBT and Education Benefits for MI School Meals Program for the 2023–24 school year. A new application is required at the beginning of each school year. For more information, please visit manchesterschools.us, select food service, then select Application for Summer EBT and Education Benefits. If you have questions, please reach out to Lisa Garrison at (734) 428-9711 ext. 1120 or lgarrison@mcs.k12.mi.us.
