Erick Chris Johanson (1953–2024)

Erick, age 70, of Manchester, Michigan, died peacefully in his home on January 3, 2024.

He was born in Ypsilanti on September 8, 1953, to Helge and Vesta Johanson. Helge came from Sweden as a mason and did much of the stonework in Ypsilanti.

Erick also was a handyman, who built the barn on his property, repaired cars, and worked with his wife on household repairs. He loved going to church and often cheerfully passed out gospel tracts when shopping.

Erick and his wife Kathy’s daughters meant the world to them. Erick would often play Barbies and draw pictures with his girls while Kathy was at work. He went on many walks with them, kept air in their tires for bike rides, and taught them how to repair things.

He also treasured time with his grandkids and loved being their Grandpa Jo, never failing to laugh at their silly jokes.

Erick was an active member of Harvest Baptist Church for almost 40 years, devoting much of his time and energy to sharing the gospel of Jesus through various church ministries and praying for missionaries around the globe.

Although Erick had many hardships through medical difficulties, his love of the Bible and support of his loving family helped him overcome the adversities.

Erick is survived by his wife, Kathy; his two daughters, Laura (Jason) Wohlgemuth and Rebekah (Dave) DeWaard; his four grandchildren, Stacey, Brianna, Zachary, and Alexis; and his great-grandchild, Ashlynn.

Erick’s Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, April 27, at 1pm, at Harvest Baptist Church located at 17999 Washburn Rd, Grass Lake, MI 49240.

For anyone who is interested, donations can be made to Harvest Baptist Church.
