In the small town of Manchester, Michigan, the name Matt Donnellon has become synonymous with dedication, community spirit, and unwavering service. As he celebrates an impressive 50 years as an agent, Matt’s journey is one marked not only by professional achievements but also by a profound commitment to the community he serves.
Matt’s story began in 1975, a year that would change the course of his life. Following the sudden passing of State Farm agent Bob Evans due to a heart attack, an opportunity arose for Matt to move to Manchester. With the office located at 200 Riverside Dr, right next to the picturesque River Raisin, Matt stepped into his new role with enthusiasm and determination.
Recognizing the potential for growth and improvement, Matt soon made a significant move: He purchased a building on East Main Street in Manchester, transforming it from a former beauty shop and shoe repair shop into a beautiful office space. With the assistance of local craftsman Don Limpert, he uncovered the stunning brick structure, creating a welcoming environment for his clients. Above the office, Matt and his young family lived, firmly establishing their roots in the community.
In 1978, Matt took another significant step by purchasing a home on Beaufort Street where the original printing press from the Manchester Enterprise was found in the basement. He converted the garage into an office space, where he would work for the next 40 years while raising his seven children. This period not only marked a significant chapter in Matt’s professional life but also in his personal life as he balanced work with family responsibilities.
His commitment to the community extended beyond his role as an agent. In 2002, his first daughter, Janet, joined him in the office, bringing a new generation of energy and dedication to the family business. Together, they managed to relocate the office back to Main Street, this time next to the post office in 2018, ensuring that Matt’s legacy continued to flourish.
Matt’s involvement in the Manchester community has been extensive and impactful. He began volunteering at the annual Manchester Chicken Broil in 1976, taking on a role in the coleslaw station and continuing to sell tickets year after year. His dedication to youth development was evident when he served as a Cub Scout Master and later as a Scout Master in Chelsea, fostering a sense of adventure and responsibility in the young minds he guided.
In addition to his volunteer work, Matt joined the Kiwanis Club after being invited by Tom and Rhonda Ash while working on the Christmas in April project. The Kiwanis family welcomed him with open arms, and he became an integral part of their mission to serve the community and the youth through Kiwanis Builders Club. His commitment to emergency preparedness is another testament to his dedication, as he has generously donated to the Community Resource Center for many years, ensuring that Manchester is prepared for any unforeseen circumstances.
As Matt Donnellon reflects on his 50 years as a State Farm agent in Manchester, it is evident that his journey has been about much more than insurance transactions. It has been a journey of building relationships, nurturing families, and giving back to the community that has embraced him. His story is a shining example of how one individual can make a lasting impact, and as he continues to serve, the community of Manchester is undoubtedly better for it. Here’s to Matt Donnellon—a true agent of change and a beloved figure in Manchester.
