It’s that time of year — the 72nd Manchester Annual Chicken Broil is headed our way, with its trademark white boxes filled with 1/2 chicken, a bag of chips, radishes, and a dinner roll with butter, on July 19 from 4-8pm, at its original location of Alumni Memorial Field 0n Duncan Street,
Oh, yes … and the coleslaw! Can you just taste its savory-sweet secret recipe? It reportedly can’t be duplicated because it has an exclusive ingredient in it, we’re told, that’s not readily available. It has always been a “secret” recipe, but once it started hitting the church cookbooks (none of them quite the same!), the committee worked out this special tweak so now only a select few actually know the real recipe. Don’t tell … just enjoy it while it’s here!
The Chicken Broil began as a fundraiser to make a fence around Alumni Field. The date was 1954, and after the fencing was completed a few years later, the committee (and community) was enjoying the new tradition so much they decided to keep raising funds for other community-oriented projects and causes such as the public schools, community parks, library and local civic organizations. This year’s donations will be going towards Manchester Community Schools Athletic Complex and a greenhouse for Klager Elementary School.
Featuring on-site dining, drive-thru meal pickup or on-site walkup meal purchase, there also will be live music and a kids play area.
Tickets are $13 if purchased in advance at various merchants and offices, and $15 if purchased at the gate the day of the Chicken Broil or online. If you’re driving through, continue down Hibbard Street and follow the signage. Limited handicap parking will made available at the Ackerson School lot. The street will be closed, but a deputy will let you through, if eligible.
