ALI announces fall class offerings
submitted by Joan Gaughan
Readers familiar with the Adult Learners Institute know that an ALI Fall Kick-Off does not require a football. The only thing needed is curiosity and a means of getting to the McKune Room at the Chelsea District Library, 221 S Main St, in Chelsea, at 10:30am on Tuesday, August 5.
Comfortable chairs among friendly people as well as refreshments will be provided as you meet ALI board members and the instructors who will be describing the classes they will be teaching at various locations in the area, including Manchester at the Library.
This fall term, there will indeed be football for “dummies.” In addition, however, there will also be the history of theatrical production, music from Sondheim to the Beatles, ballet, the wonderful mess that is our brain, how to prevent becoming a victim of fraud, and how to tell a story without boring your friends. There are several travelogues, rain gardens, hummingbirds, ghost stories, food, and a class in a “good roads movement” that pre-dated Governor Whitmer’s “fix the damn roads” issue by over a century.
There is no admission charge for the Kick-Off and you can wear your flip-flops and even your Manchester Dutch T-shirt because two of the fall term’s classes are in Manchester. In mid-October, John Hauger will entertain his class with stories about one of America’s most beloved entertainers, Bob Hope. And in November, Grace Shackman will continue her exploration of local history emphasizing Manchester and Saline. More information on those two classes will be available in a later issue of the Mirror.
Registrations will also be accepted. Although the new website has made on-line registrations for ALI classes easier, paper registrations will also be accepted at the Kick-Off as well as throughout the fall term, AND two lucky people will win a $20 certificate for fall 2025 or winter/spring 2026 classes.
