The third week of summer school brought heat and adventure to the kindergarten through fourth grade students. This week, this children continued to learn strategies for reading and performing addition and multiplication in the classroom. Out in the community, the children had many exciting opportunities to learn why school is important through engaging field trip experiences.
On Monday, the children walked to the Manchester Area Historical Society for an exciting tour of the history of Manchester. The children learned about the history of the community from Ray Berg and saw portraits of residents of the community and arrowheads that have been found around town. When the children went upstairs, they learned about the different one-room schoolhouses from Jaimie Schmidt. Then they looked at a variety of historical pieces donated by the community. The tour concluded by learning about the different maps the Historical Society has posted around town.
Tuesday, the learners took a return trip to the Manchester District Library, where they took a tour of the different books that can be found in the library. After selecting new books, the children made a popsicle holder craft, which they were able to fill with popsicles for their hot return trip back to Riverside.
Their Wednesday journey took them to River Raisin Mercantile, where retired teacher and store owner Sue LaRocque welcomed the children to the store and taught them the difference between goods and services. At the end of their lesson, they were able to explore the store and received goody bags that included treats and a new pencil for the new school year.
Thursday, the children braved the heat to travel to Worth Repeating. Volunteers Barry Allen, Peggy Allen, and Joan Harvey taught the children how a resale shop works, then gifted the children with five-dollar gift cards to go shopping. This proved to be an exceptional life lesson for the children in budgeting and learning how to stretch a dollar!
The last day of the week took the children to LaRock Dental Office. There, the children received a tour of the office. They learned how a dentist office works and the importance of taking care of their teeth. At the end of the tour, Dr. LaRock provided the children with dental-care bags to take home.
The greatest joy of summer school has quickly become the incredible field trips and generous community members who have taught the children this summer. A special thank you to this week’s field trip hosts who provided the children with another successful week of learning!

River Raisin Mercantile had lots of vintage and antiques and glass things. I love the store. It was very nice and calm. When we came in her store it was very nice, quiet, and clean room. I loved the lady that worked there and I hope to inspire people to come to her awesome store.
